A domain name, web hosting and a website are connected, but they are not the same product. Understanding the difference helps business owners avoid unexpected renewals and prevents a supplier relationship from becoming a lock-in.<\/p>\n

What is a domain name?<\/h2>\n

A domain is the address people type to reach your website, such as example.co.za. Registration gives the holder the right to use that name for a fixed period, provided it is renewed. It does not automatically include a website, storage or email.<\/p>\n

What is web hosting?<\/h2>\n

Hosting is the server space and supporting service that stores website files and makes them available online. Plans may differ in storage, traffic, backups, email, databases, security and support. A business can register a domain without buying hosting, or point a domain to hosting supplied elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Who should own the accounts?<\/h2>\n

The business should be recorded as the registrant and should have access to the domain, hosting and website administration. A developer may manage the technical work, but the client needs a documented way to regain control. Use a business email address for important notices and keep recovery details current.<\/p>\n

Questions to ask before paying<\/h2>\n
